OHS Induction Course

A White Card is mandatory for all Australian construction industry employees. How it differs from other required qualifications, is that you can complete the necessary training anywhere in Australia and have it recognised in any other subsequent state or territory. As a national reform to the industry’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards – all states and territories, and they’re all signatories, will recognise training no matter in which state or territory it occurred.

All Worksafe and Workcover organisations throughout Australia recognise the new, national White Card as proof of completion of the general OHS induction course.

White Card For Construction Industry Employees

A White Card is mandatory for all Australian construction industry employees. How it differs from other required qualifications, is that you can complete the necessary training anywhere in Australia and have it recognised in any other subsequent state or territory. As a national reform to the industry’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards – all states and territories, and they’re all signatories, will recognise training no matter in which state or territory it occurred.

All Worksafe and Workcover organisations throughout Australia recognise the new, national White Card as proof of completion of the general OHS induction course.

This OHS induction course has been created specifically for those within the construction industry. It’s been adopted nationally as the required training to bring all state and territory requirements into line with one another.

The OHS induction course you need to successfully complete is called the CPCCOHS1001A ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ course. It is competency based, meaning that it includes assessment items.

It goes through incident response procedures, how to identify Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) communication reporting processes, how to identify construction hazards and control methods, and how to identify WH&S requirements at the workplace.

Furthermore the course details need to know information within the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 and Codes of Practice. Risk management, safety plans, safety data sheets, work method statements, fire starters and control types, basic procedures such as first aid and evacuation plans, hazard reporting, WH&S officers, obligations at the workplace, duty of care and the recording of work injuries and illnesses are all covered off in the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ course. Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are authorised to deliver the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ course. RTOs’ accreditation information is available to anyone via the National Training and Information Service (NTIS). RTOs go through strict auditing and accreditation processes prior to being able to deliver this training.

The ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ unit accreditation for RTOs is approved by the likes of WA Worksafe, Victoria Worksafe, Workplace Standards Tasmania, Safework SA, Workcover Worksafe ACT, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, NT Worksafe or NSW Workcover Authority.

Once accredited in Queensland by the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, for example, an RTO is authorised to deliver the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ unit in the state. Queensland construction induction cards, including the old Blue Cards, are accepted throughout Australia. Likewise, a person who currently has a general construction induction card from another jurisdiction will not need to undertake general induction training for construction work in Queensland or obtain a Queensland construction induction card.
