Entrepreneurship and Workaholism

The Dutch proudly point to their current rate of unemployment at less than 2%. Labour force participation is at a historically high 74% (although in potential man-hour terms it stands at 62%). France is as hubristic with its labour policies – the 35 hours week and the earlier reduction in employers’ participation in social contributions. Employment is sharply up in a host of countries with liberalized labour markets – Britain, Spain, Ireland, Finland. The ECB brags that employment in the euro zone has been rising faster than in the USA since 1997.This is a bit misleading. Euro zone unemployment is far higher and labour force participation far lower than America’s. The young are especially disadvantaged. Only Britain is up to American standards. The European labour market is highly inefficient in matching demand and supply.

BIT Mesra launches entrepreneurship week

BIT Mesra has officially announced the schedule of its first entrepreneurship week in the last 25 years under STEP. In spite of being the first institute to implement STEP in the nation, the entrepreneurship cell has not been entirely active. However, the entrepreneurship week seems set to set the stage ablaze, now that it is back.The entrepreneurship week as the name suggests is an attempt to spread the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the young minds. It has been observed in India that most of the people that take up engineering merely do so without giving a second thought to their passion and their desires. Obviously, this is so because we tend to stay away from what we would love to do.

The core theme of the entrepreneurship week would be to help the newbies begin a business. For this, the various aspects of beginning a business are covered by guests in their lectures, each lecture targeting a different aspect. For instance, risk analysis is covered in one lecture while government policies are covered in next.

Define What Entrepreneurship

Let’s scrap the dictionaries for today and define what Entrepreneurship is. I think it’s more of a concept or an idea rather than a thing or a status. It is an action word and something that does not revolve around everyone. It is a choice, a role and a journey all in one. It is the very concept that the American economy and several economies around the world thrive on and depend on for survival. It is the idea that will propel you, I and the rest of humanity toward a better financial future. It’s the backbone of all commerce. It’s the reason jobs exist.

Wrap your thoughts around this: Entrepreneurship is the process of making YOU better, more profitable and more capable. I love the fact that the word “process” is used here. Entrepreneurship is a process that involves taking risk, failing, succeeding, learning, growing, connecting, changing, consistency and many many more! You can’t just take a college course and say, “BAM, I am now an Entrepreneur. Now where’s my money?!” It doesn’t work that way and never will. A college education cannot teach you how to become a true Entrepreneur. Business ethics, economic education and other skills will only take you so far in the process. More is required.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP POTENTIALS SHOW UP

By virtue of this meeting, I believe my audience are a crop of aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs who are ready to take their world by storm. So, I don’t see myself speaking to some young ladies and gentlemen (as the case is), but with young entrepreneurs who will grow to become business giants in few years to come. Then, you’ll remember but may not recognize this little giant standing in front of you – because he would have grown really big too!
Let’s thank God for ideas. But, if ideas were to equal entrepreneurship, everyone of you would have been great entrepreneurs, great inventors, great business men and women. Entrepreneurship is a subject that goes beyond starting a business and staying a business owner! It’s not about blowing your trumpet, giving yourself ego-centric titles: CEO, COO, OM, ‘OPC’, ‘EFCC’ – because you have formed yourself into a company. No!

According to a report entitled, “The Economic Future Just Happened,” profiled by the Kauffman Foundation (the world’s largest foundation devoted to entrepreneurship), more than half of the companies on the 2009 Fortune 500 list were launched during a recession or bear market.

The Challenge of Building Businesses

Entrepreneurship happens to be a subject I am very passionate about, right from age 15 till date. The challenge of building businesses from scratch, negotiating deals and investing in other people’s business thrills me. Since the age of 15, I have been devoted to the lifelong study of entrepreneurship and investing. But even as an experienced entrepreneur, I still look up to my mentors for guidance and inspiration. I think it’s worthwhile I mention their names and what I have been gaining from them all these years or better still, I will dedicate an article to them later on.
